What Does A Chiropractor Really Do?

When chiropractors talk with the public, there is often an analogy that goes something like, “a chiropractor is like a car mechanic, but instead of a vehicle we are concerned with the human body.”  While this analogy is a great one indeed, I think we can take it up another notch to further clarify once and for all what the real, true goal of a principled doctor of chiropractic is!  Yes, when the human frame is well-balanced and mobile, it will (like a car) function better and have more longevity.  This is of course one very important piece of the puzzle.  There are, however, a few more points I would like to share in order to further drive home the importance of seeing your chiropractor on a regular basis!

I generally liken the work of a chiropractor to that of an electrician.  If you research what an electrician does, you will find a description like, “install and maintain the wiring and control equipment through which electricity flows.”  This is such a beautiful description, and it parallels the purpose of the doctor of chiropractic.  While it is certainly not our job to “install” the equipment (I don’t want that kind of pressure!), it IS absolutely true that we are highly focused on the maintenance of it.  Rather than working with raw electricity that is used to power machinery and household appliances, the chiropractor seeks to maintain the flow of the bioelectricity that powers all muscles, glands, organs, etc. in the body.  This is accomplished by improving the alignment of the spinal column, which is the origin of all the major nerve branches (coming off of the spinal cord).  The electrical system in the body is composed of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and research is consistently validating the beneficial effects of regular adjustments on each of the aforementioned structures.

The beauty of working with the electrical system is that it is the master controlling system of the body.  The brain, spinal cord, and nerves are responsible for powering the rest of the tissues.  They are the communication system, the power plant/power lines if you will.  When power and communication are restored to any and all tissues that may have been previously power-deficient, the body has the highest potential to heal and maintain optimal health going into the future!  Remember this forever: chiropractors don’t “treat” anything–they are seeking to get more nerve power flowing through the body’s tissues so the body can heal itself!  Treatment is not our answer, restoring the power and removing any interference is where we place our attention and focus!

Thomas Edison, the electrical genius, once remarked “the doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his/her patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”  If I knew nothing more of this man, I would have sworn he was a DC (doctor of chiropractic)!  Interestingly, we often say that DC also stands for “doctor of cause” because when we adjust the spine and restore power to the tissues, we are effectively targeting more of the underlying cause of disease, rather than trying to manage and/or cover up symptoms.  We are simply allowing the body to get back to what it does best: keep you in great health!
